Naturally at home!
Beginning a family is a journey that presents both huge challenge, but many gifts. Families come in all sorts of sizes and make-ups. This blog is about 6 families and specifically 6 women who all have in common the desire to stay at home for their children. Their reasons, as you will find out are varied and colourful.
In this blog, we hope to work through together the different issues; both practical and conceptual that we encountered, living here in Iceland. Please see the index * for more topics.

Why stay at home for your children? Although the situation of being at home with one’s family, for the mother was common place a generation or two ago it is not so now. The socio-economic changes that have occurred in our modern Western society has meant that it is now common place for children to be put into care (crèche) at a very early age. In fact according to Hagstofa íslands, 1900 adults were registered as being Home Makers. Of this number, 1500 were women.
The considerations are financial, practical, cultural and societal. In fact One could now assume that it is so standard to place a baby or child into early aged care that staying at home is a very rare occurrence. This is our understanding in Iceland (since we cannot find any solid demographic data).
